Another great video. Roy your doing a great Job. Praying for Paul. For All the Fathers out there Happy Father's Day!!
17:40 Yeah, that’s F-ing Oregon. Rangers or BLM think they have the right to stop and question you even when you are doing zero to warrant it.
Paul has this cache Into it, he shall delve But you really came here for marker 10:12
Thanks for the video. More of my stuff came in for my 3DEK, so I'm making progress on showing what I want to do. I also bought a few things. I haven't forgotten the challenge, but doing it well is taking some time. If I understand the short version of what you are saying, one can always make a fire with that pull tab device. Those are more expensive and take more space in a pack. In a desperate situation, they are the quickest and surest way to have an emergency fire immediately. Beyond that, you seem extremely skilled with just about any kind of tool. For the rest of us, the actual fire-starting tool is less important than practicing until one becomes skilled with that tool. I don't see much need to carry a variety of fire starters as much as a need to become skilled with whatever one has.
Please don't overly exact your time and place. Please avoid conflicts to your own safety.
Have you ever used lint in egg carton. Friend of mine put a mixture of wax and lint in a paper egg carton.
I like this guy.
change the channel name to the Harrell Brothers please. :) It'd be more fitting since it isn't just Paul anymore now. Or maybe Roy the gun boy? just throwing ideas guys. The last one wouldn't fit as good as it isn't just Roy though.
During my camping days, my goto fire starter were the alcohol cleaner sheets ( 3X5 unfolded) that came in the tear open wrappers, light, small, waterproof, easy to light, burn rather hot when unfolded ( but burn fast). A flame or even the sparks from a Bic lighter was enuf to get them to burn, I found that leaving them folded up they burned about 3-4 times longer than unfolded
That poptart is older than me lol
Thanks Roy, and big cheers and love to you and Paul. Fire comes from the mind, other than lightning or volcanoes or asteroids or micro novae. 👻😎
Cheating is exactly what I want to do when my life is on the line. I carry road flares. Especially when things are wet roy said it best "carry enough tinder to dry out wet wood"
WranglerStar great info on handle care!
Can also use a heat gun to soak wax into egg carton. Works well with a dinner candle as you can almost paint on the wax as the heat gun melts the candle tip.
What a great video. That last super flaming thing was great. No, thats not cheating, the guy that cheated was the guy that used a 1 pound propane bottle with the propane torch attachment and a box full of "junk mail". But it was cold and I was tired and hungry.🤕. Now Im ready for Thanksgiving.
A plastic grocery store bag will start any fire. Not the most environmentally friendly but in an emergency nothings better. Dont tell anyone though.
Seems you're getting more comfortable with the camera, awesome. Good video. Prayers for Paul. Thanks for sharing!
Good 10mm ammo is $2/round, benefit is the magazine capacity and the “shootability”, placement being key I think it’s the overall winner handgun in bear defense but it’ll never be as cool as a magnum revolver. The good 10mm ammo really gets up there in footpounds
Excellent video. On the egg carton homemade fire starter, if you have chickens, the pine wood chips you can buy at feed stores and tractor supply work amazingly, they come in a very large bag so it's not worth it unless you'd use it for chicken coops. Melt some wax, mix a handful of those chips in it and then spread it out in the egg carton, cut it up between the individual pockets, and divide them among your packs and fire kits. They work amazingly well and because of the wax they work well enough even if they get a little wet. That's an old boy scout trick.
Thank you for addressing dryer lint, so many still recommend it without trying it. Most modern lint is hard to get lit and keep burning.
23:20 We've actually updated the fire triangle to the fire tetrahedron - heat, oxygen, fuel, and uninterrupted chemical reaction. That's me being very pedantic though, and I'm not a fire scientist either, I just helped edit Chemistry for Firefighters so I picked up a couple things. Great vid as always!
My dad killed a black bear in the 80s with a 41, had it made into a rug, I wish he still had that rug.
Whatever they put in the swedish fire steel is amazing. You don't need a half inch I promise.
Although I carry rich pine sticks, I favor the old rolled- and-dipped-in-wax newspaper fire starters we learned to make in the real scouts in the early 70's You can carry them in a jar of water and they'll still make a fire, and they're useable forever Thanks for the video. ❤ Looking forward to many more
The pull start fire 🔥 amazing 😮
Swedish made Axe Hammers and Me, This Sort of Thing is My Bag, Baby by Roy Harrell
Thanks for the video and the tips.,
Good to see the pop tarts
Hot coffee and a poptart is what the lucky people have
Been camping all my life, and I think I've made more smoke than fire. Thank you Roy!
"To build a fire." Jack London
This is the best 'How to Build a Fire' video I've seen. Only one piece of advice. The JP Dupont eXtreme lighter is the apex predator when it comes to lighters.
Save your dip tins, paper towels, and cooking grease. Best fire starters are free
46:40 Wranglerstar shoutout. How The... F....My worlds are colliding. Didn't know it was all the same circle. But now it makes perfect sense. We are all... the last ones left. The ones who payed attention.
There is a lot of good information here, but yall need to start writing actual scripts and follow them. This is a very rambling narrative that makes it hard to find the good information.
"I don't know if I mentioned it in the opening but..."
Good points.
The key to the headlamps not getting turned on until you need them is to put the batteries in backwards. Easy to flip them around in the dark and you know you have a full charge. Also, surprised at the lack of first aid in the packs. You can live for 3 days without any food and minimal water, but a bad cut can be life ending.
For those interested. I searched for the book on eBay, and Jack London came up as the author of "To Build a Fire". I am not stating this to criticize or correct Roy, just simply to help others interested in reading the book. Thanks for keeping the channel fresh with content, Roy and Team!!
Would never laugh at someone's speech. If I didn't like watching you, I wouldn't. Thanks for the information and all the work you and the crew put into the videos. Very helpful and informative information. As always I appreciate your time doing these videos for us.
My limited time in the "high country" of eastern oregon, hunting and over nighting there. A place where you might not think you need a fire because its upper 90's daytime. It can drop into the 30's at night. A Mag glass might just be the ultimate fire starter. In that situation. Not so much in the west, forested area.
I remember reading that story for English class in 8th grade.
Is it fair to say that Paul started the fire and you keep it burning? Thank you so much Roy.
First off, i really like this channel and will be going through all of the vids!! Second , from my experience if you take a couple of the light anywhere matches and add them to the starter pile of wood. The starter wood usually ignites faster in a pinch. Again thank you. Love the videos ive seen and will be going thru the rest
God Bless
The trick birthday candles that relight themselves are in my pack.
What exact jacket is Paul wearing?
Great job
Crikey Roy --- carry a "Carpenter's pencil sharpener" with you ---there will always be a stick in the woods you can put in and turn ALL the tinder you need
if you ever revisit fire making skills fat lighter is a mighty fine fire starter down here we get it out pine stumps really good lighter is sticky and smells like pine sol
Most people I've known tend to use too much of it when it doesn't take a whole lot to do the job. I usually have a few sticks of about 6-8 inches long and thumb sized. You can make several fires with each stick if you're not lazy and take the time to whittle a fair sized bit of fine shavings
Youre doing well Roy, keep up the good work 👍
You and Paul need to invest in a zoom lens camera to get closeups of the stuff you hold in your hands. I don't have the eyes of a hawk after all.
Al Gores rhythm 👍🏻🔥
